Set in the village of West Dean in the South Downs National Park, The Selsey Arms is a traditional country pub with five bedrooms and a strong connection to its West Sussex setting. Goodwood Estate and West Dean College are close by, while Chichester is around ten minutes away by car, making the pub particularly well placed for a weekend in the countryside or an overnight stay around one of Goodwood’s major events.

Food is a central part of the experience, with seasonal cooking, local ales and familiar pub favourites forming the backbone of the offering. Add comfortable rooms in a converted barn and plenty of walking and cycling country nearby, and The Selsey Arms makes an appealing base for exploring this corner of Sussex.

A Country Pub in the Lavant Valley

The Selsey Arms sits in the heart of West Dean, where a pub has been part of village life for around two centuries. Its setting in the River Lavant valley gives it an easy rural appeal, with the surrounding South Downs providing plenty of reasons to linger beyond lunch or dinner.

The atmosphere remains rooted in the traditional country-pub experience. The Selsey Arms is dog-friendly and serves local ales alongside its food, while the garden comes into its own during warmer weather. Its location also brings together several of the area’s main attractions without losing the sense of being a village pub.

Seasonal Cooking with a Proper Pub Feel

The menu is built around seasonal produce and hearty pub cooking, with enough variety to work equally well for a full meal or something smaller with a drink. To start, ham hock and cave-aged cheddar croquettes come with Parmesan and buttermilk mayonnaise, while haddock, chilli and coriander fishcakes are paired with a mango and coconut dipping sauce. There is also an Irish potato cake with smoked salmon and poached egg, and a garlic and rosemary flatbread topped with slow-cooked beetroot and goat’s cheese.

Main courses lean towards generous comfort food. Slow-cooked sweet chilli beef brisket is glazed with honey and maple syrup and served with crispy hash brown chips, buttermilk onion rings and sweet chilli gravy. Confit pork belly comes with black pudding stuffing, a smoked bacon potato cake, seasonal greens and cider apple purée, while honey and mustard-glazed ham hock is paired with triple-cooked chips and a fried egg. Beer-battered haddock with chips, garden peas and tartare sauce keeps things firmly within pub territory, alongside a pie of the day and a Tuscan bean stew with homemade rustic bread.

There is a separate selection of burgers and bar snacks for something more casual. The beef brisket burger combines slow-cooked sweet chilli brisket with smoked Applewood cheese, while the Thai fried chicken burger comes with Asian pickled cabbage. Pulled brisket dirty fries, a Thai-infused sausage roll and crispy hash brown chips round out the smaller plates.

Desserts stay reassuringly familiar. Apple and frangipane pie is served with nutmeg and brown sugar ice cream, treacle tart comes with custard, and the cookies and cream chocolate brownie is paired with homemade cookies and cream ice cream. A pecan, cranberry and maple syrup bun with salted caramel ice cream offers another suitably indulgent finish.

The wine list is concise, spanning Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Viognier and Chardonnay among the whites, with Merlot, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Malbec and Rioja among the reds. Prosecco is available alongside the pub’s local ales, keeping the drinks offering suitably straightforward.

Five Rooms for a South Downs Stay

Accommodation is housed in a renovated converted barn behind the pub, with five spacious en-suite bedrooms. The rooms are comfortably equipped rather than overly elaborate, with flat-screen televisions, Wi-Fi and tea and coffee-making facilities, while free parking is available on site.

An à la carte breakfast is included with overnight stays. During warmer months, breakfast can also be taken outside in the garden, a pleasant addition for a property surrounded by South Downs countryside. The small number of rooms keeps the accommodation side of The Selsey Arms intimate and makes an overnight stay a natural extension of dinner at the pub.

Goodwood, West Dean and the Wider Sussex Setting

Location is one of The Selsey Arms’ strongest assets. West Dean College and Gardens are close by, while Goodwood Estate is only a short drive away. That proximity makes the pub particularly useful around Goodwood’s motorsport and horse-racing calendar, including the Festival of Speed, Goodwood Revival and Qatar Goodwood Festival.

There is plenty to do at a slower pace as well. The Lavant Valley is well suited to walking and cycling, and the Centurion Way follows a former railway line between Chichester, Lavant and West Dean. Chichester itself brings the cathedral, Festival Theatre and shopping within easy reach, while the wider South Downs provide ample scope for a longer countryside break.

An Easy Country Escape

The Selsey Arms keeps things pleasingly straightforward: a traditional West Sussex pub, seasonal cooking, local ales and five comfortable rooms in a particularly useful location. Its proximity to Goodwood adds obvious appeal during the estate’s major events, but the surrounding countryside, West Dean and easy access to Chichester give it plenty of relevance throughout the rest of the year too.
